Benefits of ISO14001 Environmental Management System

In this time of environmental awareness isn’t it time you looked at implementing an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS).  But what are the benefits of such a system. More importantly, what are the benefits of an ISO14001 Environmental Management System.

ISO 14001 can be applied to any business, whatever the type, size or sector. The standard does not specify what your aims and objectives should be, instead the framework you would need to create in the context of your business activities to be effective. An EMS provides assurance to company management and employees, as well as external stakeholders that environmental impacts are being measured, reduced, and more generally improved.

Obviously, It’s the responsibility of us all to adhere to environmental legislation, legislation that’s been put in place which is relevant yours and many other businesses.  ISO 14001 encourages business owners to look at the legal obligations.  Not conforming to environmental legislation can prove very costly to a business, resulting in a hefty fine with a possible stretch in jail for some.

ISO  14001 is part of the ISO 14001 family https://www.iso.org/iso-14001-environmental-management.html

ISO 14001 also requires you to look at your impact on the environment.  It makes you think about how the activities of your company can harm the environment.  Climate change and global warming have become bywords used across all sectors of society; undertaking an aspect and impact survey of your company will show you how your company may be contributing to global warming and it will allow you to put control measures in place to reduce and prevent your impacts through reduced emissions, reduced waste, reducing energy, water and fuel consumption and reducing pollution.

An ISO 14001 Environmental Management System will encourage you to think about sustainability.  By sourcing sustainable materials and looking at the life cycle of your product your company will be helping to reduce depletion of materials that are not an infinite resource.  You will also be protecting those employed to produce those materials; you will be helping to prevent the use of child labour; you will be helping to protect the environment from pollution; you will become more aware of your corporate social responsibility.  Your neighbours are also part of your environment, so it benefits your relationship with your neighbours.

Having the benefits of an ISO14001 Environmental Management System will help to protect your reputation and prove to your clients, suppliers and your neighbours that your care about your environment. It’s also worth you reviewing a previous blog post ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
